This generation may refer to Fritz Hansen as the Steve Jobs of the chair world. He created some of the world’s most unique furniture and in turn gave a stomping ground to creative and determined designers to showcase their ideas.
In 1872, Hansen was a registered master cabinetmaker. Usually specialising in furniture parts (chair legs, iron frames etc…). But when Hansen founded his own furniture company in 1887, it’s clear he had ambition. Ambition which today makes the company number one on leading designers and architect’s list. Hansen’s first chair was produced in 1915; a simple, steamwood bent chair.
Perhaps one of the most notable parts of the Rebuplic of Fritz Hansen‘s history is the collaboration between him and Danish architect and designer, Arne Jacobsen. Although a successful architect, Jacobsen is remembered primarily for his furniture designs. The two started working together in 1934.
The Ant, designed by Arne Jacobsen under the Republic of Fritz Hansen became the biggest success in Danish furniture history although critics will argue that the Egg chair is one of Jacobsen’s finest designs . The Ant, being a collection based firmly on form, function and sustainable quality.
“Continuously seek the obvious”
Their key conceptions are just as simple, yet beautifully understood:
Visual – original, pure, long lasting
Emotionally – genuine, serene, Danish
Rational – superior quality, refined, aging with beauty
Over 50 years the company has created a collection of beautifully shaped and functional furniture that seamlessly meet through the use of innovative techniques and new materials. They have worked with a string of fascinating, creative and ambitious designers, Poul Kjærholm, Piet Hein, Vico Magistretti, Burkhard Vogtherr, Piero Lissoni, Kasper Salto and Morten Voss, to name a few.
The Republic of Fritz Hansen continues today to be the most recognised furniture design company in history, working with some of the greatest designers and architects in the world.
